Moringa Leaves Chutney Recipe – Nutritious Drumstick Leaves Chutney
Moringa Leaves Chutney, also known as Drumstick Leaves Chutney, is a healthy and flavourful accompaniment packed with the goodness of fresh moringa leaves, spices, and traditional South Indian ingredients. Known for its earthy flavour and nutritional benefits, this chutney pairs wonderfully with hot rice, dosa, idli, chapati, and even millet-based dishes. Moringa leaves are widely used in Indian cuisine and are valued for their nutrient-rich profile.
Prepared using Freedom Double Filtered Groundnut Oil, this chutney develops a rich aroma and authentic homemade taste. The mild, nutty flavour of groundnut oil complements the moringa leaves beautifully while enhancing the overall texture and flavour of the chutney.
Ingredients
- 2 cups fresh moringa (drumstick) leaves, cleaned
- 2 tbsp roasted peanuts
- 1 tbsp chana dal
- 1 tbsp urad dal
- 4–5 dry red chillies
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 3 garlic cloves
- Small piece of tamarind
- 2 tbsp grated coconut (optional)
- Salt to taste
- 2 tbsp Freedom Double Filtered Groundnut Oil
For Tempering
- 1 tsp mustard seeds
- 1 sprig curry leaves
- 1 dry red chilli
- 1 tsp Freedom Double Filtered Groundnut Oil
Method
Step 1: Remove the moringa leaves from the stalks, wash thoroughly, and drain excess water. Lightly sautéing the leaves helps reduce bitterness.
Step 2: Heat 1 tablespoon of Freedom Double Filtered Groundnut Oil in a pan.
Step 3: Add chana dal, urad dal, cumin seeds, dry red chillies, and peanuts. Roast until aromatic and lightly golden.
Step 4: Add garlic and grated coconut. Sauté for another minute.
Step 5: Add the moringa leaves and cook for 2–3 minutes until they wilt and soften.
Step 6: Add tamarind and allow the mixture to cool completely.
Step 7: Transfer everything to a mixer jar, add salt, and grind into a slightly coarse chutney. Add a little water if required.
Step 8: For tempering, heat 1 teaspoon Freedom Double Filtered Groundnut Oil in a small pan.
Step 9: Add mustard seeds, curry leaves, and dry red chilli. Allow them to splutter.
