Grandma’s Prawn Pickle Recipe – A Traditional Coastal Delicacy
Grandma’s Prawn Pickle is a treasured family recipe that brings together succulent prawns, aromatic spices, and traditional pickling techniques passed down through generations. Rich, spicy, and bursting with coastal flavours, this pickle is the perfect accompaniment to hot steamed rice, curd rice, dosa, or chapati. Every spoonful delivers the nostalgic taste of homemade pickles lovingly prepared in traditional kitchens.
Prepared using Freedom Groundnut Oil, this prawn pickle develops its authentic flavour, rich aroma, and excellent shelf stability. Groundnut oil is traditionally preferred for pickles across Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu because of its mild nutty flavour and preservative qualities, making it ideal for seafood pickles.
Ingredients
- 500 g prawns, cleaned and deveined
- 2 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- 2 tbsp red chilli powder
- 1 tbsp mustard powder
- ½ tsp fenugreek powder
- Salt to taste
- 2 tbsp lemon juice or vinegar
- 10 garlic cloves
- Curry leaves, a handful
- 3–4 dry red chillies
- Freedom Double Filtered Groundnut Oil
- Mustard seeds for tempering
Method
Step 1: Wash and clean the prawns thoroughly. Pat dry to remove excess moisture.
Step 2: Marinate the prawns with turmeric powder, salt, and half of the ginger-garlic paste. Set aside for 20–30 minutes.
Step 3: Heat Freedom Double Filtered Groundnut Oil in a deep pan and fry the prawns until they are cooked and lightly golden. Remove and keep aside.
Step 4: In the same oil, sauté the remaining ginger-garlic paste until fragrant.
Step 5: Add red chilli powder, mustard powder, fenugreek powder, and salt. Stir continuously on a low flame.
Step 6: Add the fried prawns and mix thoroughly so they are evenly coated with the spice mixture.
Step 7: Add lemon juice or vinegar and mix well to balance the flavours.
Step 8: In a separate pan, heat a little more Freedom Double Filtered Groundnut Oil. Add mustard seeds and allow them to splutter.
Step 9: Add garlic cloves, curry leaves, and dry red chillies. Fry until aromatic.
Step 10: Pour the tempering over the prawn mixture and combine well.
Step 11: Allow the pickle to cool completely before transferring it to a clean, dry airtight jar.
